Funeral & Crematorium to Scattering Ashes, Caskets, Urns & Memorials

We've heard this so often I've written this page to inform you of what usually happens regarding your loved ones cremation ashes after the funeral.

Collecting the Ashes from the Crematorium

A few days after funerals, the ashes are available to collect from the crematorium. During your funeral arrangements, you may or may not have decided what to do with the ashes. During a bereavement, it can be difficult to decide what to do with the last physical being of a loved one and in many cases it will take time to decide. The traditional choices are to either scatter or bury them or keep the ashes in a casket or urn.

Scattering the ashes

You cannot scatter or bury the ashes wherever you like. There are laws surrounding this.
You can intern the ashes at the crematorium. This means to bury the ashes or scatter them in the grounds of the crem. There will be a charge for this which will be detailed in the crematorium literature. Alternatively, you can collect the ashes from the crematorium or your funeral director and scatter or bury them yourself. There are specialist woodland burial sites and green burial sites who have a license to intern human cremation ashes.

Caskets and urns

You will receive the ashes from the crematorium or from your funeral director in a casket or urn. During your funeral arrangements, you may have chosen a particular one. Wooden urns, metal urns and pewter urns as well as caskets are available. If you haven't chosen one, you will receive the ashes together with the death certificate in the standard casket that the crematorium provides. This is usually a large plastic jar, like the old fashioned sweet jars with a screw top lid. You may want to keep the ashes in this container until you decide what you would like to do.

Memorial Jewellery

Whatever your choice for the ashes, you can have a small amount made into Memorial Jewellery in the form of a Memorial Ring or Pendant or a Memorial Paperweight. This works very well when there are several members of the family to consider. Each member of the family can have their own personal memorial.
